i.e. Let Go and Let God, Detachment

A Lesson in Detachment.

Some years ago, I attended a lecture by a spiritual figure I admire. Just before the lecture began, a woman in the aisle several seats to my left twisted her ankle. I felt concern but then noticed that several capable people involved in directing the event had gathered around her. She was in good hands.

In short, any action I could have taken to help would have disrupted my seatmates and intruded on the attention of a team that appeared to be both cooperative and skilled. My task, if I had one, was simply to wish the woman well and do what I had come to do, which was to listen to the lecture. The woman to my right, however, had drawn a different conclusion. She squirmed uncomfortably in her seat and seemed unable to let go of her concern.
She didn't seem able to let the crisis proceed without her.

I did feel sympathetic to her as well, but I didn't feel able to listen to the lecture and attempt to calm her down at the same time.
I decided to detach from her concern, too, and just pay attention to the speaker who was now leading an introductory meditation. I felt
a Power greater than myself urging me to accept the spiritual experience I and come in search of-- by letting go.
